What Is Geogrid?

Geogrid mesh is a geosynthetic material made from polypropylene, polyethylene, polyester, or fiberglass. They are used in several civil engineering-related applications to provide ground reinforcement.

Boatup geogrid fabrics are manufactured from the extrusion, weaving, or welding of a polymer to form open aperture products of varying strength, strain, and load-carrying capability for applications of soil reinforcement. Generally, geogrid mesh has a primary strength in one direction only (uniaxial geogrids) although in certain applications the strength may be equal in both directions of the product (biaxial geogrids). Geogrid mesh works by interlocking with the granular or soil material placed over them. The open apertures of the geogrid mesh allow for the confinement of the material within, thereby increasing the shear strength of such materials.

What Is Geogrid Used For?

Geogrid fabric primarily provides a stabilization or reinforcement function, to enhance the performance of soils. It also provides separation between soil and aggregate layers and is used widely in civil engineering applications.

How Does Geogrid Stabilisation Work?

The openings or apertures between ribs allow the aggregate to strike through and interlock with the geogrid. Provided the geogrid is stiff enough, the rib profile deep enough and the junctions strong enough, the aggregate is confined within the apertures forming a new geogrid/aggregate composite material with improved strength and resistance to deformation.

How Do Geogrid Solutions Reinforce Soils?

For soil reinforcement applications, the load must be transferred between the soil and the geogrid mesh. The transverse ribs of uniaxial geogrids provide an efficient mechanism for load transfer by abutment rather than friction alone. The high tensile load in the geogrid is carried by the longitudinal ribs. They must be capable of sustaining such high loading for the full life of the structure (often up to 120 years), requiring durability and long-term strength and stiffness.
